The European Space Agency launched a collaboration called CORONA-RS between PMD Solutions, Beaumont Hospital, Vodafone Ireland, and Taoglas to develop a world’s first patient wearable using 5G technology to eliminate the need for any unnecessary middle ware that has up to now impeded the scaled adoption of community patient monitoring systems. PMD Solutions RespiraSense is taking advantage of superior position tracking using the European Space Agency’s Galileo satellite system.
The Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund is a €500 million fund established under Project Ireland 2040 and is run by the Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation with administrative support from Enterprise Ireland. A total of 27 innovative projects who are sharing over €75 million in funding between now and 2021 under the first tranche of the Disruptive Technologies Innovation Fund.
One of these key projects, the HOLISTICS project will create, for the first time in Ireland, a disruptive Smart Wearables Industry Value Chain to deliver end-to-end HealthTech solutions based on emerging human-centric intelligent sensors and their wireless communication of medically validated data sets to support new products and services in the areas of Health and Wellness.
More than €7.4 million will be invested in the project, which is led by Tyndall and includes 9 industry partners of which PMD Solutions is one.
The HSE and partners demonstrated a network of digital health living labs whose goal is to accelerate the co-creation and adoption of digital health solutions in Ireland.
Digital Health Living Labs provide test beds for new digital technologies through high impact projects. These innovative projects focus on enhanced benefits and services for patients in hospitals and local communities as well as delivering value for money. PMD Solutions is part of the new respiratory living lab in CUH featuring a world’s first for automated respiration rate measurement. Additionally a virtual ward for patients with long term respiratory disease is being established. This may extend up to five hundred patients nationally.
PMD Solutions have partnered with SpirIT UK to roll out the RespiraSense continuous respiratory monitoring system into hospitals in Ireland and England. SpirIT UK is a vital partner in deploying the telemetry system that enables real-time centralized remote monitoring of multiple patients across a hospital site.
Both organizations have been working around the clock to ensure the sites using RespiraSense from PMD Solutions are successfully set up and are expanding globally. Working with the hospital, PMD Solutions, and SpirIT can deploy the RespiraSense system with 24 hours' notice. London based tech firm SpirIT UK use their technical expertise to build the back-end systems that store critical patient data and provide technical support for all RespiraSense sites.

PMD Solutions has selectively chosen Cassia Network’s E1000 Bluetooth gateway and IoT Access Controller (AC) to enable a complete respiratory rate monitoring solution for the hospital. Cassia’s gateways are being used to wirelessly transmit a patient’s respiratory rate from the RespiraSense sensor to a centralized point of care management dashboard for continuous patient monitoring and analysis. The combination of Cassia’s gateways and PMD’s RespiraSense allows for a secure means of capturing and centralizing real-time data from multiple patients to provide care staff the ability to continuously monitor for respiratory distress and to effectively manage and treat high-risk patients in busy clinical environments.
